Seein' red

I got a wonderful note from a former student yesterday:

A friend of mine... mentioned that he was taking a technical writing class taught by you. Upon hearing your name, I could not resist letting out a chuckle as I recalled the in red ink and the “rewrites” all over my undergraduate class reports from back in 1999.

The lessons I’ve learned through your courses have helped me immensely, not just in my work related tasks, but also in other areas as well. I hear your voice in my head every time I start writing – “news up front … news up front.” For all the less-than-flattering remarks, red ink, and time spent grading – thanks!

P.S. I was a bit disappointed to know that the distance education students only see the black-and-white scanned copies of their reports and miss out on the full traumatic impact of the red ink.

I loved getting this. What I loved more was his three mentions of the red ink.

I've been grading exclusively with pencil for almost 25 years.
